Alert emails
Plan: Starter and up. Below Starter the tab shows every control disabled with “Alert emails are on the Starter plan”, and nothing is sent.
Cove can email shoppers itself when a saved item comes back, gets cheaper or runs low. Open Alerts in the Cove Wishlist app menu; Alert emails is the first of its three tabs (Alert emails, Reminders, Activity). Changes are kept while you switch tabs and saved with the Save Bar at the top.
When and to whom each alert fires is explained in the Alerts overview.
Alert emails section
Section titled “Alert emails section”“Which emails Cove sends shoppers, from your store’s name, in your design’s colors and font.”
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Back in stock | Emails shoppers who tapped “Notify me when available”, and signed-in customers with the item saved. | On |
| Price drop | Emails signed-in customers with the item saved when its price drops by your price-drop threshold. | On |
| Low stock | Emails signed-in customers with the item saved when its stock falls to your low-stock threshold. | Off |
| Email signed-in customers about items on their wishlist | Lets the three alerts go to customers who saved the item, not only to Notify me requests. Only customers subscribed to email marketing in Shopify, and never after they unsubscribe. | On |
| Ask guests to confirm their email (double opt-in) | A guest who asks to be notified first gets a confirmation email and is only emailed about the item once they click Confirm alert. Recommended in the EU and UK. | On |
The thresholds for price drop and low stock are set on Settings › Alerts & emails; each switch links there.
Shoppers ask for a back-in-stock email with the Notify me when available block: add it in the theme editor anywhere in the product section, for example under the theme’s Add to cart. See Notify me.
Double opt-in
Section titled “Double opt-in”With double opt-in on, a guest’s request stays unconfirmed until they click the link in the confirmation email. Unconfirmed requests are never emailed about the item and are deleted, with the address, after 7 days. Tapping Notify me again sends a new confirmation at most every 10 minutes. Signed-in customers don’t need to confirm. Confirmation emails don’t count toward your monthly limit.
Email text section
Section titled “Email text section”“Subject and intro per alert and language. Leave a field empty for the default.”
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Alert | Which email you are editing: Back in stock, Price drop or Low stock. |
| Language | English, French, German, Spanish, Italian or Dutch. Each language has its own text. |
| Subject | Up to 150 characters. {product} and {shop} are replaced with the product title and your store name. Empty uses the default, shown greyed out in the field. |
| Intro | The opening sentence, up to 500 characters. The same placeholders work. Empty uses the default. |
| Logo URL | Optional. Shown at the top of every alert and reminder email instead of your store name. |
Default subjects in English:
- Back in stock: “{product} is back in stock”
- Price drop: “Price drop: {product}”
- Low stock: “Only a few left: {product}”
When you leave the back-in-stock intro empty, a customer who saved the item (rather than asking to be notified) gets a version written for them: “Good news: an item on your wishlist is available again.”
Logo URL
Section titled “Logo URL”The logo must be a file hosted by Shopify. Upload it in your Shopify admin under Content › Files, copy its link and paste it here. It must start with https://cdn.shopify.com/. Any other link (another site, http://) shows Use a link from your Shopify Files (https://cdn.shopify.com/…). on the field and the settings are not saved until you fix or clear it. Empty means no logo: the email shows your store name instead. The logo is shown 40 px tall (at most 200 px wide) and links to your store.
Live preview
Section titled “Live preview”Beside the settings, the preview shows the selected alert in the selected language, with your store name and currency, a sample product (“Linen shirt”, size Medium) and your current edits, logo included. It updates as you type.
Send test email
Section titled “Send test email”Send test email (top of the page) sends the selected alert, in the selected language, with the sample product, to your store’s contact email as set in Shopify. The subject starts with “[Test]” and its unsubscribe link unsubscribes nobody.
- At most 5 test emails an hour, shared with Send test reminder on the Reminders tab.
- Test emails don’t count toward your monthly limit.
- If it can’t send, the reason shows next to the button: no contact email set in Shopify, too many tests this hour, or a sending problem (try again later).
What the email contains
Section titled “What the email contains”- Your logo, or your store name, linking to your store.
- The intro.
- The product image, title and variant (size, colour) and current price. A price drop also shows the old price struck through (“Was …”); a low-stock email shows “Only N left”.
- A Buy now button that puts that variant in a cart and takes the shopper to checkout. A sale through it counts as attributed wishlist revenue.
- A footer saying why they got it (they asked to be notified, or the item is on their wishlist) and an Unsubscribe link.
The look comes from your Design Studio: the button uses your button colour and label colour (white or near-black instead when the label wouldn’t be readable), plus your font choice and corner rounding. The email is sent from your store’s name; replies go to your store’s contact email. It has no tracking pixel, no remote fonts and no scripts.
Each email goes out in one of the six languages: for a Notify me request, the language the storefront was in when the shopper signed up; for a customer who saved the item, their language in Shopify. Any other language gets English.
When emails go out
Section titled “When emails go out”Cove queues an alert as soon as Shopify reports the change and starts sending straight away; anything still waiting is picked up again about every 10 minutes. A temporary sending problem is retried up to 5 times. An email still queued after 14 days is dropped. Over your plan’s monthly limit, emails wait for the 1st of next month (see Monthly email limits).
If the page shows Email sending not configured (“Alerts are queued but not sent until the app’s email provider is set up”), Cove’s own sending isn’t available yet: alerts wait in the queue and the test buttons are disabled. Contact support.
Unsubscribe and bounces
Section titled “Unsubscribe and bounces”- Every alert email carries a one-click unsubscribe that mail apps such as Gmail and Apple Mail show next to the sender, and an Unsubscribe link in the footer, which opens a page with a confirm button. The link works for 400 days.
- A guest who unsubscribes: every alert request they have at your store is deleted, with their address.
- A customer who unsubscribes: their Notify me requests are deleted and they get no more saved-item alerts or wishlist reminders from your store.
- Bounces and spam complaints: an address that hard-bounces or is marked as spam is not emailed again for a year, and its pending requests are deleted.
What Cove keeps
Section titled “What Cove keeps”- A guest’s Notify me email address is stored encrypted, only to send that one alert. It is deleted when the alert is sent, when they unsubscribe, after 180 days if the item never comes back, after 7 days if they never confirm, and when Shopify sends a customer data deletion request. It never appears in the admin, an export or a log.
- Signed-in customers’ addresses are never stored: Cove reads them from Shopify at send time.
- The Activity tab shows counts only.
