Save for later in the cart

Plan: Starter and up.

Save for later adds a small Save for later button to every line in the cart, on the cart page and in the cart drawer. One tap moves the item from the cart to the shopper’s wishlist.

  1. In the theme editor, open App embeds › Cove Wishlist.
  2. Under Cart, tick Show Save for later on cart items.
  3. Save.
Setting What it does Default
Show Save for later on cart items Adds the button to each cart line. Off
Cart line selector For other themes: the CSS selector of one cart line, for example .cart-item. The line must hold the theme’s remove button. Dawn and Horizon need nothing. Empty
Load Save for later on every page Only if your theme has a cart drawer that Save for later doesn’t appear in. Dawn and Horizon need nothing. Off

The button only appears while your plan includes it. If you move to Free, it disappears from your cart without you changing anything, and comes back if you move to Starter or up again.

Save for later uses the Theme setting under Product cards in the same app embed. With Detect automatically, Cove recognises the cart from its markup:

  • Dawn: the cart page and the cart drawer.
  • Horizon: the cart page and the cart drawer.
  • Other themes: set Cart line selector to the selector of one cart line. Cove uses the first remove control it finds inside the line (a /cart/change link first). See Theme compatibility.

The script loads only where a cart can show up: on the cart page, and on every page when your theme’s cart is a drawer (Dawn and Horizon tell Cove this). If your theme has a drawer Cove doesn’t know about, tick Load Save for later on every page.

Lines that are part of a bundle, and lines whose remove button your theme hides, get no Save for later button.

  1. Cove saves the line’s variant to the shopper’s wishlist (their default list). This counts as one wishlist action.
  2. Only once the save worked, Cove presses your theme’s own remove button for that line, so your theme updates the totals, the drawer and the cart count its usual way.
  3. A message says Saved for later, with a View wishlist link (and, for guests past the sign-in threshold, the sign-in link).

There is no Undo on purpose: undoing would have to put the item back in the cart behind the shopper’s back. The item is on their wishlist, one tap away from the cart.

If the save fails, the cart is left exactly as it was, and the shopper sees the usual error message. This covers:

  • your store has reached its monthly wishlist actions,
  • guest wishlists are off and the shopper isn’t signed in (they see Sign in to save items to your wishlist instead),
  • the product can’t be found, or the network fails.

The button is added from the cart’s own markup: Cove asks nothing of its server until the shopper taps it. Each line’s button is named “Save for later: {product}” for screen readers.
