Wishlist button

Plan: every plan, including Free.

The Wishlist button is the theme block you add to your product page (see Add the Wishlist button). This page explains what it does once it is there. How it looks (icon, style, label, colours, width) is set in the Design Studio under Button, not in the theme editor.

The button saves the variant the shopper has selected, not just the product. Before every tap Cove reads the variant from your theme’s own product form (the id field of the add-to-cart form in the same section), so a shopper who picks “Blue / M” saves exactly that.

  • Products with variants: the selected variant is saved. Switching variants updates the button straight away, with no request: it shows “saved” only for variants that are on the wishlist.
  • Products with a single default variant: the product is saved as is.
  • Hearts elsewhere save the product: a card heart or the heart over the product image saves the product without a variant. The shopper picks one later, on the wishlist page.

A product saved without a variant counts as saving every variant. If a shopper hearted a product on a collection page, the Wishlist button shows it as saved whichever variant is selected.

When the selected variant (or the product as a whole) is on the shopper’s wishlist, the button switches to its saved look and label. A second tap removes it, from every list it is on, together with anything that made the button show as saved (a product-level save from a card heart, for example).

After each save or removal a short message appears at the bottom of the page: see The message after a save, which also covers Undo.

Not saved Add to wishlist
Saved Saved to wishlist

Both are translated into French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch, and you can change them in Design › Labels. The button reserves the width of the longer of the two labels, so the page never moves when it switches.

With the Icon only style the button has no visible text; screen readers hear “Add to wishlist” and whether it is pressed.

On Pro and Premium the button can also show a line such as “Saved by 12 shoppers” under it. See Advanced design.

  • Signed-in customers: saves belong to their customer account, so they follow them to every device and appear on the My wishlist page in their account.
  • Guests: saves are kept for this browser. When the guest signs in, they move into the account. See Guest wishlists.

You can require shoppers to sign in before they save: see Guest wishlists.

A shopper who has never saved anything costs your store no requests at all: the button is drawn by Liquid, and nothing is asked of Cove until they tap it. Only shoppers with a wishlist to load (signed-in customers, or guests who have saved before on this browser) trigger one small request per page to fetch their saved items. More in Performance.

Each new save uses one action from your plan’s monthly allowance. Removing, moving and undoing don’t. See Wishlist actions.
