The setup guide
Plan: every plan, including Free.
Cove’s Home page opens with a Setup guide: one row per step, with the progress (“2 of 4 steps complete”) at the top. The first unfinished step starts open. Most steps complete themselves: Cove asks Shopify what is on your theme instead of asking you to tick boxes.
The steps
Section titled “The steps”| Step | Button | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Turn on Cove Wishlist in your theme | Open theme editor | Shopify reports the app embed as on in your live theme. Can’t be marked by hand. |
| Add the wishlist button to product pages | Add button | Shopify reports the Wishlist button block on your live theme. Or you mark it as done. |
| Add “My wishlist” to customer accounts | Open accounts editor, Edit menus | Shopify reports the My wishlist page as added, or a signed-in customer opens it for the first time. Or you mark it as done. |
| Match your brand | Edit design | You save a design in the Design Studio, or tick its checkbox yourself. |
| Import wishlists from Swym (Optional) | Import | An import finishes. Optional steps don’t count towards the progress. |
When the four required steps are done, the guide reads “All set. Shoppers can save products to their wishlist.” and gives way to the status card below.
How steps are checked
Section titled “How steps are checked”Cove checks your theme through Shopify when you open Home, when you come back to its browser tab (for example after saving in the theme editor), and when you click Check again. A step the check just completed shows a “Done: …” message.
Shopify reports your live (published) theme only. Changes you save in an unpublished theme don’t count until you publish it. If a check finds nothing new, Cove says “Nothing new on your live theme yet”. If the check itself fails, a banner asks you to try again in a moment.
Cove never reads or edits your theme’s files to do this; it only asks Shopify which of Cove’s blocks are in use.
When a step isn’t done
Section titled “When a step isn’t done”Open the step to see why. Cove shows a hint in Shopify’s terms:
- Embed: “Cove Wishlist is switched off in your live theme. Turn it on under App embeds, then click Save.”
- Button: “The button isn’t on your live theme’s product page yet. In the theme editor, check that you clicked Save and that the block isn’t hidden.”
- Embed or button on a theme without app blocks: “Your live theme doesn’t support app blocks here. Online Store 2.0 themes, such as Dawn and Horizon, do.”
Marking a step as done
Section titled “Marking a step as done”Some setups can’t be seen by the check, for example the button on an alternate product template. For the button and account page steps, click Mark as done. The step then says “Marked as done by you; not detected yet.” and offers Undo. If Shopify later reports the step, it counts as detected.
The embed step can’t be marked by hand: Cove only counts it once Shopify reports it on.
Hiding the guide
Section titled “Hiding the guide”Click the x in the guide’s header to hide it. Home then shows “Setup guide hidden” with a Show button to bring it back. The chevron next to it collapses the guide without hiding it.
Cove on your live theme
Section titled “Cove on your live theme”Once setup is done, or after you hide the guide, Home shows a Cove on your live theme card with the state of each part:
| Row | Shows |
|---|---|
| App embed | On, or Off (in warning colour) |
| Product page button | On, Marked as done by you (with Undo), or Not added |
| Hearts on product cards | On, with “Card block” when the card heart block is in use, or “From the app embed” |
| Customer account page | On, Marked as done by you (with Undo), or Not added |
The card has its own Check again button. Undoing a step marked by hand brings the guide back, open on that step.
If the embed is turned off later
Section titled “If the embed is turned off later”If the embed was on once and Shopify now reports it off, Home shows a warning banner: “Cove Wishlist is off in your live theme”. This happens when someone switches the embed off or publishes a different theme. Shoppers can’t save products until it’s back on. Click Turn it on to open the theme editor on App embeds, switch on Cove Wishlist and click Save.
Reinstalling Cove starts the setup guide again.
